In recognition of Veterans Day, UNH Manchester is holding its fourth annual Walk a Mile in a Veteran’s Boot fundraiser. From November 9 to 18, you can purchase a paper boot for $1 and help Liberty House with their mission to feed veterans. Boots may be purchased on the second floor foyer of 88 Commercial Street from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. You can honor a veteran you know, whether family or friend, and put his or her name on the boot. The boots will be on display around the foyer.
Last year’s contribution was just under $500. This amount has been growing since raising $275 at the first Walk a Mile fundraiser in 2012. Let’s see if we can set a new record this year!
Liberty House will use the money raised to house 10 homeless veterans and feed the hungry. They also, through various donations, hand out hats, gloves, coats and sweaters to those who come in cold during the winter months. Keith Howard, executive director of Liberty House, said the mission of Liberty House is to help homeless veterans regain their independence.
“Since opening its door, Liberty House has served as temporary home for about 250 United States Veterans, offering the opportunity for these men and women to defeat the demons that led to homelessness,” Howard said.
The mission of outreach to feed and clothe the hungry throughout the winter months in New Hampshire is a huge one. Liberty House has created a donation needs wishlist with items from winter boots to canned foods to deodorant, which can be donated during daylight hours at 75 W Baker Street, Manchester, NH.
This Veterans Day, show your appreciation to those who have served. Every little bit helps.
