Five Tips to Ward off Mid-Semester Stress

October is upon us, Wildcat Nation! As we hit the mid-semester mark, I call to remind you to keep school life in perspective. It is important to take it one day at a time. Our lives are full of stressors, but it is how we handle them that make the difference. I have compiled a short list of activities to help keep stress at bay and our individual well-being in check:

  1. Breathe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 20-30 minutes of Abdominal breathing (deep breathing) everyday will reduce anxiety and reduce stress. There is nothing else needed other than yourself in taking the time to experience focused breathing. You can do it at any time in any place.
  2. Spending time with animals/pets. Our furry friends have the healing power to transform our lives in so many positive ways. UNH uses therapy dogs during finals week for a reason! Take a moment to enjoy playing with your dog in the yard or cuddling up with your cat on the couch. If you don’t have a pet, take time to volunteer in a shelter. You will be relieving stress while helping the community; it’s a win-win!
  3. Exercise. This doesn’t mean you have to join cross fit or sign up for one of those crazy boot camp challenges. Taking a 20-minute walk in the park can often do the trick. For other relaxing exercises, try yoga or Tai-Chi. Each of those methods force you to consciously focus on your breathing and be in the moment.
  4. Phone a friend or a family member. Listening to my mom’s voice even if it is only for a few minutes on the phone can be soothing and rejuvenating. I always feel better afterwards. Stop texting and start talking.
  5. Be good to yourself. Don’t let stress get the best of you. Enjoy this time in college and this time in your life. Live in the moment and remember, tomorrow is a new day.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
