Having a plan for college can sometimes make searching a bit easier. Caroline Consoli, sophomore communication arts major and graduate of Manchester Memorial High School, had a different story. She wanted a college that was close to home and one that would be affordable, but there were two institutions – UNH Manchester and another – that seemed to be the right fit.
Picking UNH Manchester, Consoli expressed happiness that she did.
“I was really nervous coming into college,” Consoli said, but coming to UNH Manchester helped ease that feeling.
Having a preconceived image of what a college classroom was going to be like – strict professors and large, silent classrooms – she was surprised to see the small class sizes, the caring faculty and the welcoming atmosphere. The library is one of Consoli’s favorite places at UNH Manchester, because “it’s really flexible.” She noted how a student can sit in the open areas and be sociable, but they can also hide away and find a secluded spot if that is what they need.
Wanting to get involved on campus, Consoli sought out opportunities. After finding some, she chose to pursue the Orientation Leader role to help her ease into being involved on campus while still balancing her school work.
“I knew I would overload myself and still have the ability to perform at my best,” Consoli said.
As well as being and OL, she is preparing to become a writing tutor for the Center for Academic Enrichment as well.
Starting training and holding the orientations is something Consoli is very excited about. Not only is she actually getting started in her new roles, it is the growth of skills that she also looks forward to. Through applying for OL, Consoli said that it has opened up so many more doors for her in the future. She is also excited to look into other opportunities such as Peer Assistant Leader and Student Ambassador.
Connecting with the students during the orientation is something she loves. Consoli said it's important to ease the nerves of new students, “because I remember how I felt.” She wants to let new students know not to sweat about getting involved right away.
“Take it easy, make sure that you acclimate,” Consoli said.
Also, she wants to let new students know not to be nervous and have an open mind about the campus. Don't underestimate UNH Manchester, she said, because it has so much to offer, and connecting and finding community and culture is a way to open up those opportunities.
