Robert Macieski, associate professor of history, will share his expertise in twentieth century social history as part of New Hampshire Historical Society’s spring history course, “John Gilbert Winant: Citizen of Concord, Citizen of the World.”
The five-part series focuses on the St. Paul’s School graduate Winant, a state, national and international leader during the 1930s and ‘40s. Winant served as a New Hampshire State Representative, a State Senator and as governor during the Great Depression. In addition to heading the newly-created Social Security Administration and the International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, Winant was actively committed to civil rights.
Macieski will join faculty members from St Paul’s School, NHTI and UNH School of Law to honor, and educate about, Winant’s many political and social accomplishments. Macieski’s presentation — titled “Progressive Pioneer of Social Justice” — focuses on Winant’s commitment to equal opportunity, and will be held at the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.
