More than 200 representatives from local colleges and nonprofits gathered on April 7 to celebrate those who demonstrate exceptional community service in higher education. The Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH) Presidents’ Awards recognize students, faculty, staff and local organizations that actively contribute to the betterment of their campus and community. UNH Manchester’s commitment to community service is well represented among this year’s recipients: Jola Leary, Presidents’ Leadership Award and 2015 Newman Civic Fellowship; Lauren Provost, Presidents’ Good Steward Award; and B.R.I.N.G. I.T.!!!, Presidents’ Community Partner Award.
The Presidents’ Leadership Award is given to an individual or student group that has made community service fundamental to their college experience. Jola Leary, a senior in the Sign Language Interpretation program, earned this award through her dedicated community engagement and active leadership among the student body. From interning as a theatrical interpreter for the Deaf to advocating for student activities, Leary has made civic involvement a significant part of her academic career. Leary has played a vital role in the Brick and Mortar Theatre Group, Ultimate Frisbee Club and Milling Around, UNH Manchester’s a cappella group, which have collectively raised more than $15,000 for charitable organizations.
Lauren Provost, research assistant professor and research & evaluation coordinator for STEM Discovery Lab, received the Presidents’ Good Steward Award for her commitment to equity and excellence in education. Provost advocates for the expansion of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs in the classroom and community — from developing policies on state committees to pioneering initiatives like the STEM Ambassadors Program, which brings local schools and businesses together to strengthen both learning and teaching skills in STEM disciplines. Provost’s commitment and enthusiasm has helped spur legislative action statewide and nationally.
Bringing Refugees, Immigrants, and Neighbors Gently Into Tomorrow (B.R.I.N.G. I.T.!!!) received the Presidents’ Community Partner Award for its efforts in improving quality of life in the community. An initiative of Granite United Way, B.R.I.N.G. I.T.!!! partners with Manchester School District to offer after school programs that both enrich and educate. From English and art classes to soccer and dance programs, B.R.I.N.G. I.T.!!! exposes immigrant, refugee and local youths and adults alike to meaningful, enjoyable programs. B.R.I.N.G. I.T.!!! is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for Manchester students and families, all while ensuring a vibrant, welcoming community for all.
