This October, I presented at the Learning Assistance Association of New England (LAANE) Conference in Greensfield, Mass.
I was asked by Dr. Karlea Brunelle-Joiner, as a current member of the First Year Experience (FYE) Program to be part of the presenting team for the workshop “How to Train and Support your Student Leaders to Increase Student Retention.” The drive through Vermont and Western Massachusetts quelled my butterflies as I admired the miracle first hand of New England in the fall. My stomach growled but I didn’t mind, I was about to enjoy a day of professional development, tacos, and cake. Sounds like my kind of Friday!
Presenting at the LAANE conference with Dr. Karlea Brunelle-Joiner, Marisa Forti and Jessica Poznanski really highlighted why I love UNH Manchester and all of the opportunities it has to offer. Jessica Poznanski for example was a Peer Assistant Leader at UNH Manchester with the FYE program before she graduated. After graduation Jess was hired to construct a similar program at a neighboring college.
For me personally entering the University system I was not a very good public speaker but through various jobs and opportunities on campus I have had the ability to hone in on these skills while talking about something I know and love-this college. The conference really ignited this love even more. I got to go around bragging about my school and talking about our great First Year Experience department that helps First-Year students to UNH Manchester transition into our community. People were genuinely interested in what I had to offer about this great program.
Not only did I present at the conference but I had an opportunity to attend other workshops and listen to what other colleges are doing to further assist their students. The conference offered me the ability to meet and engage with people who have made student development their profession and in most cases their lives.
I’m not quite sure where my education and path will ultimately lead me, although I am interested in the student development, but one things for sure, presenting at the LAANE conference was a once in a lifetime opportunity. And yes, those tacos were delicious!!
