College can be a scary thing -- new area, new people, and a work load so big that it seems impossible. Thanks to our alumni, we have some tips and tricks to hopefully help all of you incoming freshmen and current students improve skills and navigate the social and academic areas of college life.

1. Be involved!

College is not just about papers, stress, and dreading finals, it’s about having fun!

Many of our alumni said that getting involved was the best thing that they did during their time at UNH Manchester. They all encourage new students to make an attempt to get involved right when they step on campus. It is a great way to create new friendships, open up opportunities, and to have a fun activity that doesn’t involve lab reports or tons of reading. It can become a great resume builder and a way to make the most out of your tuition and college experience.

2. Be Organized!

Some students find that their high school organizational system, or lack thereof, doesn’t stand up to the rigor of a college schedule. Experiment and try different things, but make sure it is a system that you are comfortable with.

One alumni stressed to have material for each class. Whether it be a binder, folder, notebook, or a separate tote bag, this way it insures you have the materials needed for each class! Also, have a planner or calendar system where you can right down important dates such as when papers are due, tests, and meetings of study groups!

Remember, while one system might not work, don’t give up -- try another or a combination. There are many unique ways to organize, so don’t just stop at the first one!

3. Take charge of your college experience!

While this can extend into becoming involved with the social sphere of college, it also means being aware of the academic side.

Some of our alumni said to not be afraid to change your mind. College and the major you choose is not definite. While at some point in time a decision has to be made, take the first year to try out new things!

Try taking a variety of classes and talking with other students about their journey. Be honest with yourself and ask if you are really enjoying what you are doing. If you are struggling with that thought, reach out to faculty and staff. UNH Manchester has faculty and staff that are eager to help on this journey and want you to succeed.

4. Make connections with Faculty, Staff, and Student Leaders

Again, college can make some new students feel lost because there is so much to think about! Take some time and connect with your professors and staff in various departments of the school.

One alumni wrote that having even just an introduction under your belt can open the door to many possibilities. Every freshman is connected with a Peer Assistant Leader (PAL) who will help with showing you resources around campus, important things to keep in mind, or just being a mentor when you need one, so take advantage of that!

Whether it be your advisor, an academic counselor, professor, student leader, or a boss, have someone you can go and talk to when you feel stressed.

5. Take advantage of the different departments on campus

You might say, “It’s too early in my college career to be thinking about this”, but don’t! It is never too early to think about doing anything in college. Take advantage of internships, study away, and work study options while in school!

One alumni said that internships are a great way to “try before you buy”, and sometimes can land a job offer after the internship is done. Time flies while you are in college, so schedule meetings with the appropriate staff member to begin talking about your options.

Studying abroad is a great way to not only travel, but to gain experience on a global scale to help build your resume. Start thinking about these things early so when the time comes to actually apply to an internship or study away program there isn’t a lot of stress and a time crunch.

College is always something that students grow into -- every student finds their niche in a unique way. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works for you. Struggling is normal, but always try and reach out to someone that you believe can help.

The biggest tip that all five have in common? Have fun! Even though college is hard work, it should also be a time where memories are made and opportunities are presented. Be proactive and make your college experience one to remember!
