Textbooks can often be a large and overlooked expense leaving students and parents scrambling to come up with a couple hundred dollars at the last minute.
Here are a few options to help students save money:
- Rent textbooks: This is a great option for general education courses
- Buy used: This option is almost always cheaper than buying new
- Borrow from the library: Check to see if your professor has put the textbook on reserve for your class
- Share: Find a classmate that might be willing to split the cost of a textbook with you or buy a copy from a student who took the class in a previous semester
- Older versions: Check with your professor to see if you might be able to buy the previous edition (if no major changes were made; always check first!)
- Ebooks: If you own an iPad or tablet look into eBooks or electronic versions
The options are endless. Also, ask your friends how they saved money on textbooks and compare prices.
The key is to plan early that way you don’t limit your options!
