Graduation is just around the corner…are you ready for it?
As a graduating senior myself, I wanted to make sure that I was ready for the big day. So I met with Career Consultant, Jennifer Landon, to discuss graduation preparations and get an insight on all of the guidance available at UNH Manchester. If you are an undergraduate finishing a degree this May, here are a few tips for you:
What you should have already accomplished:
- Your ‘Intent to graduate’ form should have been sent in and approved
- Already met with Jennifer Landon to discuss post graduation options
- Attended a Job Fair
- Have a good sense of what you would like to do
If you plan to participate in the commencement ceremony on Thursday May 15th:
- Register to participate in the commencement ceremony with the Registration Office by May 25th
- Order your cap and gown: Available to purchase from the bookstore now until April 18th
If you already have a job or other post grad plans:
- Be sure to connect with Jennifer Landon: She would like to know where you are headed and how she can help
- Then fill out the 1st Destination Survey for upcoming graduates
If you are still searching for post grad options:
- Use Wildcat Careers to search for jobs and internships: Upload your resume and cover letter to be visible to employers
- Utilize your LinkedIn profile: Join groups, upload your work, and connect with classmates, coworkers, and professionals
- Research UNH Manchester alumni on LinkedIn and then write personal statements to the alumni whom you would like to connect with
- Connect with Manchester Young Professionals Network & Stay Work Play
- Check out job websites like indeed.com, simplyhired.com, careerbuilders.com and glassdoor.com
- Research professional organizations and businesses related to your career field
Senior Week will be from April 28th to May 2nd:
- Monday-Wednesday 11-1 and Tues-Wed 4-6 will include walk-ins with career advisers. The walk-ins will include: Google yourself, LinkedIn profile updates, professional photo booths and more
- Thursday 4:00-5:00 Internship Coordinator, Barbara Wirth, will be in the grotto to discuss cleaning up your Internet dirt
- Appointments for mock interviews and more
Other things to remember:
- Make sure your online profile is appropriate: If employers go to search you online, what will they find?
- Have an employer friendly voicemail and email
- Know a company before applying: Interviewing is a two-way process, so it is important to be prepared and have knowledge of a company beforehand
- GO SEE JENNIFER LANDON: If you have any questions or would just like some guidance, a trip to the career counseling office is your best bet
This is a stressful time of year for many of us but it can also be a fun time if you are prepared. Use this advice, take it all in, and enjoy these last few weeks as an undergraduate at UNH Manchester. You deserve it.
